The John Charles Centre for Sport was the venue for the first ever Leeds Inclusion Cricket event in partnership with Yorkshire Cricket Board, Chance to Shine Leeds SSP/ Active Schools. 6 schools and 7 teams arrived at the John Charles Centre to participate in the event supported and ran by Yorkshire Cricket Board staff.

The teams were split into 2 groups across 3 pitches with play getting underway at 10.15am.

Group 1:

Temple Moore

South SILC -Broomfields

Swallow Hill

Bruntcliffe Academy 1

Group 2:

 East SILC -John Jamieson

Bruntcliffe 2

South SILC -Rodillian Academy

The standard of cricket was excellent and a real excitement was created by the players throughout the event. Their enthusiasm towards the day was great to see and it resulted in some close match ups and plenty of sixes! For the team not participating and sat off, a skills pitch helped them develop as cricketers with fun games based activities to continue the fun and enjoyment, this was led by an inclusion friendly coach. As the group phase concluded the players took lunch eagerly waiting on who was progressing to the final.

The top team in each group were to compete in the final, second would play second to see who claimed third place and Temple Moore and Broomfields would play again as John Jamieson wanted to continue their development on the cricket skills.

The winners of the tournament would progress through to the Yorkshire Inclusion Finals on Friday 10th March with the runners up having another chance to make it through to the finals and will be invited to the West Yorkshire Finals to compete against other inclusion schools in the area on Thursday 9th February.

Rodillian Academy v Bruntcliffe Academy 1:

Pitch 2 hosted the 3rd place play-off with Bruntcliffe Academy coming out on top. However this was not without drama with the last batter for Bruntcliffe smashing 3 6’s to win the game and claim the 3rd prize! Now onto the final…

Swallow Hill Community College v Bruntcliffe Academy 2:

The final saw the best standard of the day with both teams batting, bowling and fielding to a great cricketing level. Boundaries were aplenty in this high scoring affair but it was good bowling from Bruntcliffe that sealed the victory. They won by 43 runs but both teams can hold their heads up high after a fantastic day of cricket.

Bruntcliffe Academy will now progress to represent Leeds and West Yorkshire in the Inclusion Finals where they stand a good chance of going all the way! Swallow Hill will progress to the West Yorkshire Finals to battle it out for a spot at Headingley, best of luck to them and I will be there to see their progress.

To conclude a fantastic day and event enjoyed by all and I can only see it getting bigger and better in years to come. Thanks need to be given to all the teachers and pupils for making the day excellent and big thanks to our enthusiastic staff and Active School Leeds for making this event possible. We now progress into the outdoor competitions where teams will enjoy even more cricket and skills. That will be hosted at Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club on Thursday 27th April! See you all there!
